Marks event to deliver the goods

A Law Society-accredited seminar on consumer goods branding will be held by the Intellectual Property Institute on Thursday 15 March. Hosted by the McDermott Will and Emery law firm in their 7 Bishopsgate, London headquarters, the seminar will address recent mark developments in the busy sector and tackle a range of issues connected with passing off in the course of trade.

Announcing the seminar in a press release, the Institute said: ‘Branded products in fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors compete by earning the trust and confidence of consumers over time. Manufacturers invest heavily in developing, launching and promoting innovative products, innovations which bring choice and diversity to the market, increase competition and add value to categories.

‘The strong reputations of branded products have significant value which in turn acts as a magnet for traders keen to profit from brand investments. The counterfeiter and parallel trader are obvious examples but there are others who use more subtle ways to free ride on a trusted brand’s reputation.’

The speaker will be last year’s WORLDleaders European IP Awards winner for best achievement in practice, Evie Kyriakides of Mars Inc. Her talk will cover the strengths and weaknesses of IP rights, the need for manufacturers to continue bringing innovations to market, and issues that can arise when retail customers become direct competitors. Former ITMA council member and London-based international trade mark consultant, David Tatham, will chair the event.
