ICANN: New site online - and new sites on-side
This week, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) launched a reformatted website that will help its users and associates to keep better track of its policies, procedures and decisions. The new site is part of a series of initiatives designed to improve the organisation’s dialogue with the online comminity, from national managers to registrars and domain holders.
ICANN executive officer and corporate affairs vice president, Paul Levins, told the media: ‘ICANN is committed to being more transparent and accessible. Reform of our website is a key part of that commitment.’
‘Importantly, we have included a button in the top navigation that allows people to understand our processes and their timelines more clearly. We have also included a graphical representation of those processes that show where a particular policy discussion or program is on its timeline.
‘This should provide greater certainty and definition and allow people to understand how a decision was made or what stage of development a policy or program is at.
‘All these measures help us to be more accountable to the community. There will be further improvements in the future.’
ICANN is currently enjoying its 28th International Meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. Other major announcements to have emerged since the meeting began on 26 March all relate to the formalisation of country code top level domains (ccTLDs).
At the start of the conference, it was revealed that Libya’s national domain authority had joined forces with ICANN through an Accountability Framework agreement, formalising the .ly code. On 28 March, the Ivory Coast (.ci) was drafted via the same means, while Russia’s .ru Coordination Centre signed up with an exchange of letters. All three countries are now official ICANN partners.
