Brainchild roadshow pulls up at USPTO
The winner, runners-up and commended entries of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and History Channel-led Modern Marvels Invent Now Challenge have arrived at their spiritual home, following a brief tour. Between mid-March and late May, schematics, models and paperwork relating to the Challenge’s 25 highest-rated entries were displayed in such halls as San Jose’s Tech Museum of Innovation, the St Louis Science Center, the Orlando Science Center and New York’s Citigroup building.
Now the exhibits have been set up for the last time at the USPTO’s Washington headquarters, where they will continue to amaze and intrigue visitors until 30 June. The exhibition has been organised as a demonstration of grassroots originality in US culture, with the 25 inventors representing 17 different states and exploring ideas with huge scope for universal adoption. Environmental and medical uses were high on the longlist’s agenda, and most of the inventions’ patents have now been approved.
As announced last month, the winner – crowned Modern Marvel of the Year – was Mike Sykes’s Enertia chemical treatment system, which increases the heat-storage ability of wood used for house building. The other longlist entrants will undoubtedly have been consoled by their slots in the exhibition, along with the exposure their ideas are likely to receive.
Jon Dudas, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the USPTO, said, ‘The USPTO is proud to be associated with the Modern Marvels Invent Now Challenge as it provides a wonderful opportunity to recognize the work of talented independent inventors. We are also delighted to host this exhibition, as we believe it can inspire visitors to have a greater appreciation for our intellectual property system and perhaps even pursue their own inventions.’
