Samsung in Sharp Patent Row

Japanese electronics giant Sharp Corporation has announced that is has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for the alleged infringements of five patents used in television, computer monitor and mobile phone technology.

The complaint concerns the infringement of LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) related patents and the suit was filed in a US district court in the state of Texas earlier this week. This follows the breaking down of negotiations between the pair for a licensing agreement.

Both Sharp and Samsung have been leaders in the development of the liquid crystal industry. Sharp began research into the sector as early as 1970, producing the world's first application of LCDs in calculators in 1973, while Samsung founded its electronic arm in 1969. Sharp is seeking unspecified damages and a ban on the sale of Samsung LCD modules in the US as well as televisions and mobile phones that use the technology.

A statement from Sharp read: ‘Sharp has negotiated in good faith with Samsung for an LCD patent license since 2006 but has regrettably been unable to resolve this matter through negotiations. As a result, the company was compelled to file the current lawsuit to protect its intellectual property.’ Samsung’s representatives were not available for comment but like Sharp, the Korean-based company is seen as one of the sector’s great innovators and has its own extensive portfolio of technologies and patents.
