Microsoft and Cadence to cross licence patents

Industry giants, Microsoft Corp and semiconductor design software leader Cadence Design Systems Inc said they are working to cross licence their patent portfolios to aid future collaboration in areas of interest.

The patent cross licence will give each company a greater freedom in which to innovate across a broader spectrum not usually accessible without heavy patent consideration.

Cadence explained that its commitment to technologies that improve development and manufacture of electronic circuits through research and development it would continue to build and create similar company relationships.

"Since IP licensing is a cornerstone of the software industry, it’s an essential element of Cadence’s strategy", the company added.

Microsoft is no stranger to cross licensing with recent collaborations including: Cisco Systems Inc, LGE, NEC, Samsung, Siemens AG, SAP AG and Toshiba.

Since 2003 Microsoft has licensed a large percentage of its IP portfolio, which has enabled others to benefit from its research and development technology - that includes several thousand issued and pending U.S. patents.
