Big brands give cyber-squatting the boot
With cyber-squatting becoming an increasing issue on the radar of big and small business, the International Trademark Association issued a press release to say that some of its biggest members, Dell, Microsoft, Time Warner, Wal-mart and Yahoo intend to bring legal actions against a total of 22 cyber-squatting operations.
INTA Executive Director, Alan Drewsen said that pursuing cyber-squatters was the right thing to do to protect consumers. “Increasingly cyber-squatters target business and consumers by registering Internet domain names such as microsoftcomputers.com that are confusingly similar to legally protected company names and internationally recognised trademarks”.
Worryingly for consumers and business alike, according to Gartner, the average phishing victim in 2006 was defrauded $1, 244. Also the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) stated that disputes relating to cyber-squatting increased by 25% over the last year.
No details were given of the cyber-squatters, but with so many high-profile businesses involved, it won’t be long before more cases hit the courts and the headlines.
