HD DVD patent holders begin cross licence meetings

MPEG LA announced that the first meeting of essential HD DVD patent owners, currently consisting of 16 companies, was held in Los Angeles at the end of September.

The purpose of the meeting was to create a joint license providing fair, reasonable, non-discriminatory access to essential patents, as an easier alternative to negotiating separate licenses.

MPEG LA has applauded the remarkable cooperation of so many companies working together to improve the way in which a vast range of interested parties can use the HD DVD format by addressing the way in which they can license the IP. CEO Larry Horn said that 'the substantial progress made in this initial meeting bodes well for achieving there goals'.

The objective is for the licence to strike a balance between marketplace conditions and access the licence will provide to patent users.

Additional meetings have been planned to continue the work. IP Review will be monitoring the progress and will report when further information is available.
