UK piracy site shut down by FACT

TV Links, a video pirate website which listed a directory of copyrighted material from YouTube and other sites has been shut down. This if the first time an online directory has been shut down in connection with video copyright infringement.

The site, made popular for it's links to well known TV shows such as The Simpsons, 24 and The Wire was taken down last week. A 26 year old from Cheltenham in the UK has been arrested in connection with the closure of the site.

The investigation was jointly run between the Gloucestershire Police and the Gloucestershire County Council trading standards with much of the information coming from the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT).

While the site itself did not host any content, FACT claim that the links were directing users to content that had been recorded illegally, many of which were from cinemas and content that has been illegally distributed.

Trading Standards spokesmen Roger Marles commented, "The 'users' are potentially evading licence fees, subscription fees to digital services or the cost of purchase or admittance to cinemas to view the films." It's thought that about £459m was lost to the material on the site.
