Patenting activity shows that the USA is leading the way to personalised medicine
11 August 2006
London, 11 August 2006. A patent analytics report compiled by CPA, the world’s leading Intellectual Property (IP) support services provider has revealed that the government, US based pharmaceutical companies and academic institutions are highly active in the area of BioInformatics.
“BioInformatics has emerged as an essential part of making sense of information in molecular life sciences”, says Professor Stephen Roberts from the University of Oxford, who worked with CPA in compiling the industry report, “and organisations pioneering computational analysis and using techniques to fuse information from multiple experimental sources, are perhaps closer to personalised medicine than ever before”.
Through data manipulation and CPA’s proprietary patent analytics methodologies, the report clearly indicates that patents by volume are dominated by the pharmaceutical industry, yet it is government research and academia who are key patent filers in the areas of transitional and Integrative genomics – relating to the study of the interconnected pathways of genomes and gene products, using this information to assess an entire biological system – like the human body. The aspect of personalised medicine speaks to the linkage between genes + disease + cure. BioInformatics helps to understand the core processes at a cellular and molecular level, creating a ‘virtual’ biological computational programme to model the linkage between these three components.
The report confirms that the governance from US corporations, academia and the state government is key to innovation and commercialisation, generating alone, more than half of the granted BioInformatics patents worldwide. CPA also found that developing countries such as China and India are showing signs of increased patenting activity in relation to BioInformatics where outsourcing and competition in the Asian markets will become a key driver to the industry, moving forward.
Bianca McDonogh, IP Consultant at CPA, and part of the patent analytics team that produced the report comments: “The report is both interesting and useful to the scientific community, addressing the complexities of patent trends that will help to shape commercial strategies and ultimately unravel the holy grail of patent licensing within a ‘hot’ technology sector. The University of Oxford added another dimension to this report providing the best domain expertise in the disentanglement of a multifaceted patent landscape. This report is essential reading to anyone involved in BioInformatics research.”

About the report:
The above information is derived from one of a series of industry reports created from the analysis of global patent landscapes. The reports contain a carefully selected set of graphics to clarify complex patent trends. The analysis offers an insight into the marketplace of established and emerging players, within a specific industry, as well as any technological diversification, patent portfolio growth rates, geographic coverage and the competitive landscape of an area. This report is part of a series of industry reports, compiled by CPA. These are still available and cover patenting in the anti-depressant field and patents in the hybrid technology sector.
