Sydney, Australia – Intellectual Property (IP) Software firm CPA Software Solutions (CPASS) today announced the launch of electronic filing with IP Australia. This unique enhancement, which will speed up and may notably reduce errors in the IP filing process, was created using CPA Inprotech, the company’s sophisticated IP management system.
Peter Cornish, who was instrumental in the project’s success and formerly General Manager Customer Operations Group at IP Australia, comments: ‘I am pleased to confirm that the first successful National Phase Entry transaction using our new B2B technology has been successfully received and processed by IP Australia. We have worked together for some time to reach this milestone and it is great to see the outcome of that work.’
CPASS and leading Australian IP firm FB Rice & Co worked alongside IP Australia to develop a robust and secure business-to-business IP filing platform. The new system uses the Australian government’s ABN-DSC certificates, which ensure secure and authentic transactions.
Chris Owens, Senior Partner at FB Rice & Co. explains: ‘When entering into this project, FB Rice & Co aimed to develop a filing system that added value rather than just using technology for technology's sake. The resulting system requires no additional data entry or document preparation as the whole transaction is generated from data already in our CPA Inprotech database. Importantly, the return communications from the Patent Office are automatically logged and data is extracted back into the database, further reducing the requirement for data entry.’
This seamless electronic interface contains a number of world firsts for effective IP filing. Traditional filing methods are predominately a manual process, commonly time-consuming and potentially costly if errors are made. CPA Inprotech’s E-filing facility automates this laborious process thus reducing the cost and increasing security surrounding filing patent applications.
Mike Fleming, Head of Development for CPA Inprotech is excited about the future possibilities with IP Australia. ‘I believe eventually that a large number of our clients will follow suit and that over time this will become the normal method for filing with IP Australia. We’d like to thank the substantial efforts of both FB Rice & Co and IP Australia in making the project a success ’
Currently only one transaction type is available with IP Australia, however there are plans for further developments including those for trademark and design transactions.
‘This important new tool will allow us to deliver even better service to our clients in the future’, concludes Chris Owens.

About e-filing:
CPA Inprotech’s E-filing facility automates this laborious process thus reducing the cost and increasing security surrounding filing patent applications.
When a Patent application is ready for electronic filing all the relevant data and associated documents are packaged via an intuitive wizard based interface. These packages are reviewed and approved by an attorney and digitally signed and delivered to the IP office. The transaction is accepted and confirmation of filing, along with an invoice is electronically returned to the IP firm. The filing receipt and a corresponding invoice is stored in the CPA Inprotech database and this automatically updates the next stage in the firm’s workflows, which generates letters, reminders, future due dates and even accounting transactions.
