Intellevate staff proofread their ten-thousandth patent, but alarmingly still only 66% of US patents get proofread.
2 November 2006

Minneapolis, MN  – Intellevate, part of the CPA Group, announced today that its staff has proofread their ten-thousandth issued patent, making Intellevate the largest patent proofreading organization in the world.

Based on the current climate and form, the company predicts that before the close of 2006 its IP support center will have proofread over 6,500 patents this year. Intellevate’s proofreading clientele include some of the world’s largest and most prestigious IP law firms and corporate legal departments, several of which have their own dedicated proofreading teams.

The head of the IP department at one Fortune 100 company had this to say about Intellevate’s patent proofreading service: “We had Intellevate do our proofreading at a fraction of our cost, but the real benefit has been the improved quality. They are finding some significant issues that may not have been picked up by outside counsel review.”

Earlier this year, Intellevate announced that mistakes are found in 98% of sample patents, some of which contain serious mistakes that weaken core claims, and for some companies this could be detrimental. Proofreading should be an integral part of the prosecution process and missing out this step could put patents at risk. Many firms and corporations are now realising that proofreading doesn’t have to be a time-consuming or over-priced chore and could save time and money in the longer term. Yet, it is estimated that only 66% of US patents are proofread, with Intellevate already proofreading 5% of those.

Intellevate’s patent proofreading functions have grown by 100% in the last year. Recruitment has increased to meet demand, but quality and training are taken very seriously. Each employee goes through extensive training and adheres to a designated methodology, which focuses on specific guidelines and procedures, ensuring top quality patent proofreading.

“ We train our staff to be meticulous and doubt every word in order to catch every mistake – our clients have come to expect that of us and that is why we continue to perform for them,” concludes Leon Steinberg, Intellevate’s CEO.
