Multi-shoring: 24/7 access to expertise

Legal services outsourcing is frequently associated with overseas operations in countries like India. But while offshore centres offer valuable services for global businesses, sophisticated vendors are now providing on-the-ground support from multiple onshore locations too. Leah Cooper outlines the approach at CPA Global to NewLegal Review

Corporate legal departments have been outsourcing their substantive and non-substantive legal work to external vendors for generations. Whether external counsel or third-party specialist service provider, outside experts play key roles in the day-to-day life of most company’s legal functions, whether they are called upon to provide support for complex litigation or to undertake highly-pressured tasks such as due diligence background work or specialist intellectual property (IP) work such as patent and trademark renewals.

This helps dispel the myth that outsourcing has to mean offshoring. While some companies, like Rio Tinto, have already taken the bold step to outsource some of their legal support work to India and have been very satisfied with the level of quality and security; for others, there’s still something of a leap of faith involved and they may understandably prefer to test an onshore arrangement first. Service providers that can offer a viable multi-shore capability seem to be on to a winner.
