Case Study:
A world leader in digital video technologies needed to acquire patents to gain entry into a new technology standard that would make their current portfolio's revenue stream obsolete. Further, the competitive landscape revealed that the major patent positions were blocked by patent pools formed by industry heavyweights. The Company needed to identify licensable/purchasable portfolios owned by either a smaller company or a company with similar technology applied to a different industry.
The Company first undertook their own study, using online databases and tools. While they found many patents of interest, the ratio of time and resources to actual yield was high and they subsequently engaged CPA to form a similar analysis to see if CPA could do it better. The CPA team, through their iterative "funnel" methodology, not only validated the patents the Company had already identified, but had also presented them with additional, relevant patents – in a much more efficient and cost-effective turnaround time. As a result, the Company decided to purchase one of these portfolios.
