I’m Zoe, and I’m a Trademark Client Service Advisor based here in the Jersey office.
To many people’s surprise, I haven’t always worked in the corporate world. When I left school after completing my GCSE’s, I went on to enroll at Highlands College to do the IMIAL Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance course.
After two years of further full time education, both practical and theory study, I became a qualified mechanic! (Do you know how many people say, “OH MY GOD, NO WAY! I NEVER WOULD HAVE PUT YOU DOWN AS A MECHANIC”). I used tools instead of computers and rocked pink overalls to stamp my authority as a woman in a workshop. It was all fun and games until I realised that there wasn’t many of us female techs about, not even just techs, I didn’t really come across many females in the motor trade full stop.
I adapted very quickly to being the only female in a predominantly male environment (I have older brothers) and gained experiences and skills that will stay with me forever. But I didn’t feel like I had the same chances as the rest of the guys I worked with, and I genuinely didn’t see a ladder for me to climb.
After a while, I came out of the workshop and went to do admin in the Motor Trade. My knowledge of cars helped me in that role, and I was good at what I did, but after years of sitting in the same rut and not going anywhere as there wasn’t that ladder for me to climb, I decided I wanted a change. I wanted to better myself and have a career rather than just a job - so I joined CPA Global! To date, this is the best life choice I have made.
I have been with CPA Global for two years now and the opportunities, training and support I have been given have made me grow as person and enhanced my drive to be a better version of me! I’ve even gained confidence that I never thought I’d have.
Here at CPA Global, I have always been made to feel like we are one team. I have never felt like I do not have the right to voice my opinion, get involved with events and be involved with things going on outside of my department and my job role.
#EachforEqual for me means that I can be confident in my future, and when I have children, they will see a world where it doesn’t matter whether you are male or female, if you want to grow and make something for yourself, there’s nothing stopping you. It’s all down to YOU. I pledge to respect both Women and Men in whatever role they do in life, whether it be a CEO, a Parent, a teacher or even the local shop owner.
We all have the right to flourish, regardless of our sex!
Thanks for taking the time to read my ramble, I just have one last thing to say and I hope it gets your thoughts flowing; “What will you be pledging?” #IWD2020
