‘IAM Strategy 300 – The World’s Leading IP Strategists’ identifies visionaries in the development and implementation of strategies that maximise IP value. This year, four of our experts were named on the annual list. We caught up with them about their careers and what they envisage for the future of IP.
Toni Nijm, Chief Product and Strategy Officer at CPA Global.
I am responsible for our product and services portfolio, including the software platforms and development teams. In this role, I drive the Company’s strategy to deliver greater connectivity and integration of its software and services.
Why do you work in IP? Tell us more about your role at CPA Global.
I have worked in technology for almost twenty years – as part of larger R&D and product strategy teams, before qualifying and working as a patent attorney in 2002. Working as a patent attorney opened my eyes to the potential for digitalisation in the IP sector and how IP management could be transformed by technology.
In 2004 I co-founded my own IP management software and services provider, Ipendo. In 2011 Ipendo was acquired by CPA Global and now forms part of our forward-thinking product portfolio. I have occupied a number of roles at CPA Global since the acquisition – but have been Chief Product and Strategy Officer since April 2017.
What technology trends do you expect to see in the future of IP?
Innovation is speeding up and this has resulted in an unprecedented number of filings - global patent applications rose to a record 2.9 million in 2015. Working in R&D for a number of high-tech companies, and as a patent attorney, means I understand the challenges IP professionals now face. With companies globalising at break neck pace, the only way to manage IP growth is through connected technology. The next global revolution will happen through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to automate manual processes and extract relevant decision support data from huge sets of data in real-time. This has the potential to identify significant trends in petabytes of data.
The IP Platform from CPA Global is the first step towards bringing together technology, services and tools that will help innovation and IP professionals make better-informed decisions. Consistent and verified data is going to be the driving force in the future of IP.
One of the most expensive and risky areas in IP is administrative tasks – particularly when it means coordinating information across IP offices and associates in different jurisdictions. By deploying AI and ML technology that can monitor email correspondence from various patent offices and IP associates around the world, it is possible to fully automate information retrieval in the future. Co-ordination will be faster, more streamlined and much more accurate.
What does it mean to be recognised in the IAM strategy 300 list?
After spending more than fifteen years in IP management and developing my own IP technology with Ipendo, it is a real honour to be recognised as a world leading strategist by IAM. I am driving strategies for a more connected future of IP and committed to driving IP management as a more efficient and collaborative function for our customers across the globe.Discover more about our world-leading strategists
