When Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, one of the country’s largest law firms, merged with specialist IP firm Townsend and Townsend and Crew LLP, the newly created firm of Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP (KTS) was faced with consolidating two massive IP portfolios. Since the IP management system is the engine of most IP practices, the company set an aggressive eight- week timeline to complete the database integration to minimise the interruption to business operations.
Understanding that a project of this magnitude would require collaboration and flexibility, KTS partnered with CPA Global. KTS utilised the company’s outsourced docketing services to relieve the administrative burden on its practice, while the databases and processes were consolidated on the company’s hosted IP management system, FoundationIP.
Accelerate data conversion, outsource administrative tasks during transition
Although KTS was already using CPA Global’s Patent Renewals Service and FoundationIP software, the data and technological demands of the timeline meant CPA Global had to fully leverage its experience and apply its implementation methodology to help KTS meet its goal.
Although the sheer volume of data that needed to be mapped in such a short period of time provided a stiff challenge, accelerating the data conversion of the Townsend portfolio into the FoundationIP database enabled CPA Global to quickly synchronise the patent renewal payments and docketing processes into one database. At the same time, Townsend’s existing IP management system was migrated to FoundationIP, allowing staff at the firm’s newly acquired offices around the country to access the data.
While staff received ongoing training on the new software and got up to speed, KTS leveraged CPA Global’s docketing services to reduce the administrative burden on the practice. Following the completion of the data merger, CPA Global was able to assume responsibility for Townsend’s patent annuity payments.
Working with the FoundationIP team to accelerate the transfer of data to the patent renewals group, CPA Global’s Integration Team ensured that the new data from FoundationIP was configured to interface with the company’s new system.

Risk minimised during transition period
The expedited data conversion and integration of the Townsend portfolio into the FoundationIP management system cleared a path for the seamless synchronisation of docketing procedures and processes, as well as the implementation of a single renewal management system for the firm. Similarly, since FoundationIP is quickly and easily deployed with very little internal resources needed, the flexibility of the cloud-based system accelerated the completion of the entire project.
Improved workflow efficiencies, collaboration
Quickly integrating Townsend’s IP portfolio into Kilpatrick’s existing FoundationIP system meant that KTS no longer needed to utilise separate IP management systems and processes to manage its expansive portfolio. Storing all client data and IP assets in one centralised location improved workflow efficiencies and enhanced collaboration among key case stakeholders.
Outsourced docketing eased administrative burden
During the transition following the merger, KTS staff received ongoing training on the cloud-based FoundationIP software. Already a CPA Global Outsourcing client, KTS could confidently rely on the company’s outsourced docketing services during this period to enable staff to focus on learning the new system and processes.
