Procopio was faced with two key challenges: mitigating client and firm level risks, and optimising the firm’s staff to deliver outstanding customer service while facing increasing cost pressures from clients.
Procopio’s Management Committee tasked Chief Operating Officer, Jim Perkins, with conducting a review of the firm’s IP docketing processes.
An unusual route to Chief Operating Officer: from rugby player to legal executive
Jim Perkins’ career captures the essence of the unique qualities of Procopio and its leadership. A rugby enthusiast from England, he was educated in the United Kingdom and the United States, culminating in a MBA from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the University of Surrey, UK.
Jim’s varied career reads like a list of childhood dream jobs: nuclear engineer; security advisor; rugby player and US national coach; successful entrepreneur. What led this non-lawyer to run the operations (including finance, marketing, administration and human resources) of a leading US law firm?

Jayne’s team offers prospective clients a unique IP Diagnostic service. This process delivers expert analysis of an IP operation, focusing on best practice use of people, processes and technology to mitigate risk, increase efficiency and profitability. All of which helps law firms attract and retain clients.
The IP Diagnostic involves a three part process:
- Project planning: understanding the key objectives of the law firm and the exact scope of the engagement
- Investigation: on-site interviews with team members including partners, attorneys and paralegals. This can also include observational analysis and time and motion studies
