2020-White-Paper-Review_Of_Licensing_Scenario_And_Patented_Technologies_Relevant_To_Versatile_Video_Coding

Versatile video coding (VVC), also called as Future Video Coding (FVC) or H.266, is a video compression standard which is being positioned as the successor to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC or H.265) and is scheduled for completion in 2020.

However, the standard faces the same obstacles which inhibited the adoption of HEVC. Industry players have taken some measures to address this pre-emptively; however, prospective licensor/ implementors of VVC should be aware of the key technologies pertaining to the standard and the patents that could influence their implementation.

In this report, we have reviewed factors which could impact licensing of VVC. We have also identified and analysed the key patented technologies which have a possibility of being relevant to the VVC standard.
