Most people only discover the names of innovators after they arrive with a completed invention, ready to change the world. Few, if any, of us think about the process of discovering and nurturing innovators and ideas, nor about the people that do so.
For Croatia-born Michela Magas creating an ecosystem that promoted innovation was everything.
She is the founder of the UK Design Innovation Lab Stromatolite, which built the Music Tech Fest Platform – an innovation-driven community of more than 5000 members. Established in 2000, the company’s goal is to use design labs to build networks of creative people that collaborate to foster innovation. Her company discovered how, by placing culture and creativity at the centre of a community, knowledge transfers and innovation occurs much more quickly.
Michela believes in bringing together different ages, genders and social and cultural backgrounds using music as a social glue. Her work has fostered innovation in areas as diverse as neuroscience, forestry and microcomputing. In 2017 she won the EU Prize for Women Innovators for nurturing entrepreneurial innovation. During her career, Michela has established an ecosystem and support structure for radical new ideas to be created, developed and protected – creating a fast-track for the formation of new technologies.
"After all, technology is, and always should be, a means for human empowerment."
